April 11, 2016 – Felice Gaer, director of the AJC Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, received the 2016 AJC Murray J. Friedman Memorial Award – her favorite quote in Krista Bard’s calligraphy. The work is a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: “Where after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are part of the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” (Eleanor Roosevelt, 11.5”x17”, ink and oil pastels treated with essential oils and holy water)

Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. That is where the tribes go up – the tribes of the Lord – to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel. There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, peace be within you. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity.” Leah Daughtry gave limited edition prints of this work to VIP volunteers at the Democratic National Convention.
